Since opening in 1985, the Saskatchewan Ronald McDonald House, located in close-proximity to Saskatoon's Royal University Hospital, has been a "home away from home" for thousands of families. Each of these families share the need to travel to Saskatoon, to be with their child as they undergo specialized medical care at RUH. Many of the children require extended stays in hospital and it is vital for them to have their parents close by.
Over the past few years the House has experienced times when we could not accommodate all those in need. Nothing is more difficult than for staff to turn families away. In 2005, our Board of Directors made the decision to purchase the residential property immediately adjacent to the existing building. This property has since been cleared and will be the site of a future addition or expansion of the existing House. We are currently in the process of accurately assessing our needs in consultation with the Saskatoon Health Region. Once that work is complete, we will be able to decide exactly what is needed and then we will build it.
None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of Ronald McDonald House Charities, McDonald's Restaurants and a legion of volunteers and donors from across the Province of Saskatchewan. Our operating costs are significant. Design and construction will not be inexpensive. However, we know from experience that when Saskatchewanians are made aware of pressing needs, we are ready and willing to meet those needs - to do whatever it takes, together.
While our economy has a tendency to fluctuate, one fact is constant. Sick children and their families need what Saskatchewan's Ronald McDonald House offers, "A Home Away From Home". Our commitment to them is absolute. We could use your help, too. It is an exciting time for Saskatchewan's Ronald McDonald House!
