Ronald McDonald House Family Room

Reaching more Families in Saskatchewan

On September 27th, 2016 Ronald McDonald House Charities – SK opened it’s very first Ronald McDonald House Family Room in the Prince Albert Victoria Hospital PEDS Unit. This partnership between RMHC-SK and the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region is the first of it’s kind in our province and will help support families in northern Saskatchewan health regions.

The 1,300 square foot family room space is a place for families to escape the hospital setting and enjoy the comforts of home in a relaxing, peaceful and warm environment. The family room is operated by staff and volunteers of RMHC-SK and our doors are open 7 days a week 9am-9pm. Amenities of the space include:

  • Livingroom with TV and fireplace
  • Kitchenette (with microwave and oven)
  • Dining space
  • Refrigerator
  • Private bathroom and shower
  • Laundry facility
  • Three Napping nooks
  • Phone, computer and complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Play area with arts and craft supplies
  • Coffee, tea & light snack
  • An opportunity to chat with Family Room staff, volunteers and other families

In the first three months of operation, the Family Room supported over 1000 families in northern Saskatchewan, an average of 7 – 10 families a day. Clearly this expansion is making a big difference for families on the PEDS unit. In fact, one mother wrote: “This family room is so heart warming and cozy – it would probably be so boring and lonely if it wasn’t here”.
